World renowned artist donates iconic works for charity auction

World

The world renowned Kenyan based artist and designer, Anthony Russell, has donated two pieces of his work to be auctioned at a charity ball in London.

Russell, born and raised in Kenya and the UK, has donated the pieces to Caudwell Children, the national charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families.

The pieces will be auctioned at The Butterfly Ball, the charity’s annual flagship fundraiser, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in Mayfair, London, on Thursday 25th May, 2017.

Russell, a passionate conservationist and philanthropist, draws on a lifetime of experience in the African wilderness, and a deep knowledge of tribal culture, to create his works.

Russell has developed a unique and distinctive style by combining photographic images with mixed media; including acrylic and ochre paints, organic powders, natural inks, ostrich shell beads, antique artefacts and colourful feathers.

Russell, a passionate conservationist and philanthropist, draws on a lifetime of experience in the African wilderness, and a deep knowledge of tribal culture, to create his works.

The sepia tones hark back to old colonial times and his work often contrasts vivid tribal images with large, iconic, photographs of wild life in a poignant tribute to conservation in Africa.

Russell, who has enjoyed the patronage of such luminaries as Calvin Klein, Stephano Gabbana, Ronnie Wood, David Bailey and Dragon Den's Duncan Bannatyne, is delighted to be supporting Caudwell Children. As he explained: "I'm a friend of John Caudwell, the founder of the charity, who I met at one of my London shows. The charity does amazing work supporting disabled children with specialist equipment, treatments and therapies.

"They also provide a range of fun activity days and they deliver an annual holiday to Disney World, in Florida, for children with life limiting conditions"

"So I'm delighted to be donating two large, very special pieces that I'm sure will create maximum impact and raise a great deal of money for the charity."

Kerrie Davies, Head of Events at Caudwell Children, says the donation will be one of the highlights of the charity auction. She said: “The pieces are stunningly beautiful! Rain Dance is an edge-worked acrylic measuring 69"x49", which features a Maasai warrior and is valued at £11,000, whilst Vanishing Lion, a worked photograph with mixed multi-media, measuring 69"x43", that features a reclining lion under a fearsome cloudscape, is valued at £16,000.

"Anthony's work has a haunting quality about it and these two masterful pieces have a powerful sensuality about them. They really capture the beauty of Africa and with his global following I'm sure there will be plenty of people in the room eager to buy them."
